Grand Portage State Park MNIf you love natural history, Grand Portage State Park in northeastern Minnesota is a perfect destination for you to visit. The hiking in this state park is great, with a half-mile trail secure for all hikers. This trais is part of the ancient 9-mile Indian trail that goes around the park?s numerous waterfalls to reach Lake Superior. The park itself is part of the Grand Portage Indian Reservation and borders Canada, so it is one of the most northern state parks in the United States. The land is not actually owned by the state park system, but is rather leased from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Therefore, the park is not highly developed, but you can follow trails to see some of the highest waterfalls in northern Minnesota, which were formed by glaciers, and deep gorges and ridges, which were formed by erosion. The river in question is called the Pigeon River, and along its banks, you can enjoy a picnic lunch while you view the unique plants and wildlife, which includes bunchberry bushes, dogwood tress, eagles, beaver, moose, black bear, and great blue heron. |
